Lilla Szász
Mornings, afternoons, evenings, 2018–2023
My series focuses on my grandmother, who has Alzheimer’s and is cared for by her daughters in the countryside. While she never appears in the photos, I aimed to capture the stories and processes of daily care through medicines, medical equipment, lists, and other everyday objects. These ‘objects of care’ create still lifes that reflect both the caregiver and the person receiving care without turning their illness into a spectacle. My family collected and organized these items for the photos, and while some images are clearly staged, others subtly blend into the everyday setting, adding a sense of timelessness. The series illustrates the repetitive and monotonous nature of care, as well as the associated feelings of despair and shame. One key photo shows my grandmother’s notebook, filled with daily blood pressure recordings, highlighting the ritualistic nature of care and hinting at the inevitable end of this routine.
