My father, Leszek Nowaczyk, died as a result of alcohol abuse when I was sixteen years old. Over time, I grew accustomed to his absence. At first, I felt relieved – there were no more arguments, no more shouting, and no more violence at home. As the years went by, I forgot more and more about him, but the feeling of emptiness never left me.

In early 2023, I came across my father’s diary, titled “Dark Thoughts.” I realized that I had never really known him and that he had a sensitive side as well. He was a poet, an outstanding photographer, a caring husband, and above all – a loving father. Although I missed his love, I know today that he never stopped loving us. I always felt like I was searching for something, even though I never knew what it was. This project offers an initial answer to my longing by trying to come to terms with the image of my father, while also trying to find myself.

Biografie

Jakub Nowaczyk, b. 1995 in Sieraków (PL); lives and works in Kraków (PL). Nowaczyk graduated in Film Studies and Media Culture from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, as well as in Art and Design from the University of the National Education Commission in Kraków.
