The project uses the form of a portrait to explore the social construct of a group of men in the rural idyll of the Danube Valley. A central element of the men’s daily lives is “Beer Wednesday,” a firmly established ritual in which they meet weekly to drink beer together.

The photographer questions whether this ritual serves as a social response to a perceived boredom – the same boredom that once led her to leave the region herself. At the same time, she herself is searching for a sense of familiarity and reflecting on her own return to her old home. Recurring motifs, such as the bench, serve as symbols of the past, the present, and what has disappeared. The documentary and artistic photographs thus merge into a nonlinear narrative.

Biography

Ronja Hermann, b. 1991 in Spaichingen (DE); lives and works in Fridingen an der Donau (DE). In her artistic practice, she explores contemporary social dynamics and collective behaviors from a personal perspective. Hermann’s work has been exhibited at venues including the Neuhausen Open-Air Museum and the f2 Photo Festival in Dortmund/Herne.
