The dynamics within my family are marked by silence regarding the events and suffering of the Nazi era. My great-grandmother and my grandmother were the only survivors from their branch of the family following deportations to various concentration camps. These gaps in our family history have become woven into our relationships and are passed down, yet they are never spoken of. I see this project as an exploration of the gaps in my family’s history. In doing so, I do not claim that the narrative is complete; rather, I am gathering a fluid collection of many starting points. My work revolves around the unspoken and thus traces what is fading and blurred.

The artistic process here is an act that approaches reality but never truly encounters it, knowing that words are not enough, or rather, that words themselves are the reason for the incomprehensibility of reality. Thus, every aspect of the work addresses the failure at the boundary of the experiential.

Biography

Alexander Henting, b. 1991 in Essen (DE); lebt und arbeitet in Wien (AT). Henting beendet 2026 das Studium der Fotografie an der Folkwang Universität der Künste Essen. In seiner künstlerischen Arbeit widmet er sich dem Thema fehlender historischer Aufarbeitung, speziell im familiären Kontext.
